3 Simple Ways to Shrink a Bathing Suit

Beach season is just around the corner, and you’ve probably taken your bathing suit out of storage, only to find that it’s stretched out or too big. Don’t worry, there’s no need to buy a brand-new bathing suit when you can shrink your current one using these simple methods.

1. Use Hot Water

The simplest method for shrinking your bathing suit is by using hot water. The heat from the water will help tighten the fabric fibers, making it a snugger fit.

Step 1: Fill a basin or sink with hot water – the hotter, the better. Be cautious not to scald yourself.

Step 2: Submerge your bathing suit in the hot water for about 10-15 minutes.

Step 3: Gently rub and knead the fabric while it’s under the water.

Step 4: Drain the basin and rinse your bathing suit with cold water to set the size.

Step 5: Gently squeeze out excess water and lay it flat to air dry.

2. Try Boiling

For a more aggressive shrinking approach, consider boiling your bathing suit. This method is best for suits made of nylon, polyester, or lycra.

Step 1: Fill a large pot with water and heat it on your stovetop until boiling.

Step 2: Turn off the heat source and carefully submerge your bathing suit in boiling water for about 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Use tongs or a wooden spoon to remove the bathing suit from boiling water, being careful not to burn yourself.

Step 4: Rinse it under cold water to set the new size.

Step 5: Gently wring out any excess water and lay your bathing suit flat to air dry.

3. Use Your Dryer

If you prefer using modern appliances for shrinking tasks, consider utilizing your clothes dryer on a low heat setting. Keep in mind that this method may cause color fading or fabric damage, so use it as a last resort.

Step 1: Wash your bathing suit with mild detergent and cold water.

Step 2: Place the damp bathing suit inside a pillowcase or laundry bag to protect it.

Step 3: Put the pillowcase or laundry bag with your suit in it into the dryer.

Step 4: Set the dryer to a low heat or delicate setting, checking on the garment every few minutes until it reaches the desired size.

Remember to always check care instructions on your bathing suit’s label first; not all materials can withstand these methods. By following these simple techniques, you’ll find yourself with a perfectly fitting bathing suit in no time!
