3 Simple Ways to Measure Cabinet Hinges

Introduction:

Cabinet hinges may seem like a minor detail, but they play an essential role in the functionality and aesthetics of your cabinets. When it comes time to replace or install new hinges, measuring them correctly is crucial for a proper fit. Here are three simple ways to measure cabinet hinges to make the process a breeze.

Method 1: Measure the Overlay

  1. Close the cabinet door and observe the overlay, which is the portion of the cabinet door that covers or “lays over” the cabinet frame.
  2. Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the distance from the edge of the door to the edge of cabinet frame where it overlays.
  3. Record this measurement as your overlay measurement; this is essential information for choosing a suitable hinge.

Method 2: Measure Hinge Hole Spacing

  1. Open your cabinet door and locate two screws securing the hinge to the door.
  2. Using a measuring tape or ruler, measure from the center point of one screw hole to the center point of another screw hole. (Note: Be cautious not to overtighten screws when reinstalling hinges, as this can strip wood around holes).
  3. Record this measurement as your hinge hole spacing; knowing these dimensions will help select appropriate replacement parts.

Method 3: Measure Hinge Width and Height

  1. Remove one hinge from a cabinet door and place it on a flat surface.
  2. Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the width (side-to-side) and height (top-to-bottom) dimensions of hinge in both open and closed positions.
  3. Record these measurements as your hinge width and height; this data will help determine if new hardware is needed or if existing hinges can be reused.

Conclusion:

Armed with these measurements, you’ll be better prepared when choosing cabinet hinges for your project or replacement needs. Remember that precise measurements are key to ensuring a proper fit and smooth operation. Before purchasing new hinges, double-check your measurements with a professional or manufacturer guidelines, as there may be additional factors that can impact the types of hinges required for your specific cabinets. Happy measuring!
