3 Easy Ways to Stop Water Hammer

Introduction:

Water hammer, also known as hydraulic shock, is a common issue in the plumbing systems of many homes. The phenomenon occurs when the water flow suddenly changes direction or stops, causing a surge of pressure in the pipes. This pressure wave is referred to as water hammer and can lead to noisy pipes, leaks, and long-term damage to the plumbing system. Fortunately, there are several easy and effective ways to remedy this issue.

Here are three easy ways to stop water hammer:

1. Adjust the Water Pressure:

One of the leading causes of water hammer is high water pressure in your home’s plumbing system. To prevent water hammer and potential damage to your pipes, it’s crucial to maintain a reasonable water pressure level (40-60 psi). You can do this by installing a pressure regulator on your main water line. This device regulates the water pressure entering your home, ensuring it remains within a safe range.

2. Install Water Hammer Arrestors:

Water hammer arrestors are specifically designed to tackle the phenomenon of water hammer head-on. These devices feature an air chamber and spring-loaded mechanism that effectively absorbs the pressure created by sudden changes in water flow. By doing so, arrestors minimize both vibration and noise associated with water hammer.

To be effective, install a water hammer arrestor near each fixture likely to cause a hydraulic shock (washing machines, dishwashers, etc.). Newer homes may already have arrestors integrated into their plumbing system; however, older homes may require retrofitting with these devices.

3. Secure Loose Pipes:

Loose pipes amplify the noise associated with water hammer and can lead to long-term damage if not addressed. As part of your regular home maintenance routine, inspect plumbing lines for any loose or unsecured sections of pipe.

To secure loose pipes, use pipe strapping or clips to fasten them firmly to wall studs or other structural elements. Ensuring a snug fit prevents the impact and vibration caused by water hammer from compromising the integrity of your plumbing system.

Conclusion:

By implementing these three easy solutions, you can effectively stop water hammer, protect your home’s plumbing system, and enjoy peace of mind. In addition to these measures, it’s essential to perform regular maintenance checks on your pipes and fixtures. That way, you can catch any potential issues early on and prevent more significant problems down the line. If you’re unsure about tackling these tasks yourself or need guidance on your plumbing system, consult a professional plumber for assistance.
