3 Easy Ways to Say “Excuse Me” in Spanish

Introduction:

There are many instances where you might want to say “excuse me” when learning a new language, especially when interacting with locals or navigating through crowded spaces. In Spanish, there are three common phrases you can use to politely express this sentiment. Mastering each of these phrases will allow you to smoothly navigate through Spanish-speaking environments. Here, we will introduce and explain the three easy ways to say “excuse me” in Spanish!

1. Perdón

Perdón is likely the most frequently used phrase for “excuse me” in casual situations and is highly versatile. When you accidentally bump into someone or if you need to pass through a crowded area, simply say “Perdón.” Not only does it work as an apology but it also serves as a polite way to get someone’s attention. For example, if you need to ask for directions, you can begin the conversation by saying, “Perdón, ¿podría ayudarme por favor?”

2. Disculpe

Disculpe is a more formal and respectful way to say “excuse me” in Spanish. It is ideal when speaking with strangers or those who hold a higher rank or are older than you. You can use it when you want to interrupt someone but do so in a professional manner. For example, if you need to ask a professor a question during their lecture, it would be appropriate to say “Disculpe, tengo una pregunta.”

3. Con permiso

Translated literally as “with permission,” con permiso is used when walking past someone or attempting to exit a tight space such as an elevator or busy public transit area. Instead of saying “excuse me,” this phrase explicitly asks for permission to pass by. So, when trying to make your way through a crowded room, simply say “Con permiso, por favor” and politely move forward.

Conclusion:

These three easy ways to say “excuse me” in Spanish will help you convey politeness and respect in a variety of situations. Each phrase has its unique context, and mastering the differences between them will make your experience in a Spanish-speaking environment more enjoyable. So next time you find yourself in a situation where you need to politely interrupt or apologize, remember these phrases: perdón, disculpe, and con permiso.
