3 Easy Ways to Find ECCN Numbers

Introduction:

Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCN) are essential for companies looking to ship their products internationally. The United States uses the ECCN system to categorize items based on their characteristics and regulate the exporting of those items according to the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Properly identifying an ECCN number for your product is crucial for complying with US export regulations and avoiding fines or penalties. In this article, we will outline three easy methods to help you find the ECCN numbers for your products.

1.Consult the Commerce Control List (CCL)

The CCL, a part of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), contains detailed information about controlled items and their associated ECCN numbers. Access the CCL through the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) website at www.bis.doc.gov. The CCL is divided into ten categories and five product groups, making it easy for you to locate your item. Search for your product by its technical specifications, performance capabilities, or specific functions. Once you’ve identified the most suitable category, you can find its corresponding ECCN number.

2.Contact the Manufacturer or Supplier

Another effective method to determine your product’s ECCN number is by consulting with its manufacturer or supplier. These parties usually have access to accurate information about their products and are often knowledgeable about export control requirements. Reach out to them via email, phone, or their official website if they have a designated Export Compliance Officer or department. Be prepared with the specific details about your product, such as its model number, specifications, and intended use when discussing with them.

3.Submit a Commodity Classification Request (CCATS)

If you’re unable to determine your item’s ECCN number through the previous methods or have concerns about its classification, consider submitting a Commodity Classification Automated Tracking System (CCATS) request to the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). This service allows you to obtain a formal classification ruling from BIS experts. To submit a CCATS request, you’ll need to provide technical information and characteristics about your item, such as its model number, specifications, marketing materials, and user manuals. The BIS typically takes 4-6 weeks to process the request and provide a response.

Conclusion:

Understanding the ECCN number for your products is essential for ensuring compliance with export control regulations. Utilize these three methods, starting with consulting the Commerce Control List, contacting the manufacturer or supplier, and finally submitting a Commodity Classification Request if necessary. Be thorough in your research and always maintain up-to-date information about your products as changes in regulations can affect their ECCN classifications. Adhering to proper export procedures will ultimately benefit your company’s reputation and help avoid legal complications in the future.
