Gem squash, a small and round variety of squash, is becoming increasingly popular among home cooks and professional chefs alike for its mild flavor and versatility. In this article, we will talk about three easy ways to bake gem squash that are simple enough for anyone to tackle in their kitchen. But before we dive into the different methods, let’s first learn how to prepare gem squash.

Preparing Gem Squash:

1. Thoroughly wash the gem squash under running water to remove dirt and debris.

2. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice off the top (stem end) of each squash.

3. Remove the seeds and fibrous pulp from the cavity using a spoon. You can either discard these or set them aside for roasting later.

Now that your gem squash is prepared let’s learn three easy ways to bake them:

1. Simple Baked Gem Squash:

Ingredients:

Gem squash (however many you want to bake)

Salt and pepper

Procedure:

– Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

– Place the prepared gem squash on a baking sheet, cut side up.

– Season with salt and pepper.

– Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the flesh is soft and easily pierced with a fork.

2. Cheese-Stuffed Gem Squash:

Ingredients:

Gem squash

Grated cheese (such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Gruyère)

Salt and pepper

Procedure:

– Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

– Place the prepared gem squash on a baking sheet, cut side up.

– Season with salt and pepper.

– Fill each cavity with grated cheese.

– Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly while the flesh is soft and easily pierced with a fork.

3. Garlic & Herb Baked Gem Squash:

Ingredients:

Gem squash

Minced garlic

Chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, basil, or thyme)

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

Procedure:

– Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).

– Place the prepared gem squash on a baking sheet, cut side up.

– Season with salt and pepper.

– In a small bowl, mix minced garlic, chopped herbs, and olive oil.

– Generously brush or spoon the garlic and herb mixture onto the cut side of each squash.

– Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the flesh is soft and easily pierced with a fork.

These three simple methods create deliciously tender baked gem squash that can be served as a side dish or enjoyed on their own. Feel free to get creative with additional toppings and seasonings—your taste buds will thank you for it!
