2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz: The Electric Rebirth of an Icon

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz marks a significant milestone in automotive history, reimagining the iconic VW Microbus for the electric age. This highly anticipated vehicle blends nostalgia with cutting-edge technology, offering a unique proposition in the growing electric vehicle market.

Design and Aesthetics

The ID.Buzz’s design is a masterful blend of retro and modern elements. It captures the essence of the original VW Bus with its boxy silhouette, large VW logo, and optional two-tone paint scheme. However, it’s thoroughly modern with its LED lighting, aerodynamic touches, and sleek lines that hint at its electric powertrain.

The interior is where the ID.Buzz truly shines. It offers a spacious, airy cabin with a flexible seating arrangement. The long-wheelbase version available in the U.S. market provides three rows of seats, accommodating up to seven passengers. The dashboard is minimalist yet functional, dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster.

Performance and Range

Under the skin, the ID.Buzz is built on Volkswagen‘s MEB platform, specifically designed for electric vehicles. In the U.S., it comes with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations:

  • The rear-wheel-drive version features a single motor producing 282 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.
  • The all-wheel-drive variant adds a front motor, boosting total output to 335 horsepower.

The ID.Buzz is equipped with an 86.0 kWh battery pack, offering an EPA-estimated range of 231-234 miles, depending on the configuration. While this range is competitive, it falls short of some rivals in the electric SUV and minivan segments.

Charging capabilities are impressive, with the ID.Buzz supporting DC fast charging at up to 200 kW. This allows for a 10-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions.

Technology and Features

Volkswagen has packed the ID.Buzz with modern technology. Standard features include:

  • A 12.9-inch central touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Over-the-air update capability
  • A suite of advanced driver assistance systems

Optional features include a larger 12.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a premium sound system.

Practicality and Versatility

The ID.Buzz excels in practicality, offering up to 146 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The flat floor and boxy shape make it ideal for hauling large items. Clever storage solutions are scattered throughout the cabin, including under-seat compartments and a removable center console.

Pricing and Availability

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz is set to go on sale in the U.S. in late 2024, with a starting price of $61,545 for the base Pro S trim. The range-topping Pro S Plus trim with all-wheel drive can exceed $70,000 with options.

Conclusion

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz is more than just a vehicle; it’s a statement. It successfully marries the charm and versatility of the original VW Bus with modern electric technology. While its range may not be class-leading, its unique design, practicality, and cultural cachet make it a compelling option in the electric vehicle market. For those seeking a family-friendly EV with a heavy dose of nostalgia and character, the ID.Buzz is in a class of its own.
