The 2025 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) represents the most efficient and technologically advanced version of the popular midsize SUV, offering the benefits of both electric and gasoline power.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

The Sorento PHEV features an advanced plug-in hybrid system consisting of:

  1. A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine
  2. A more powerful electric motor compared to the standard hybrid
  3. A larger lithium-ion polymer battery pack

This combination produces a total system output of 261 horsepower, providing strong performance along with excellent efficiency.

Electric Range and Charging

One of the key advantages of the Sorento PHEV is its ability to operate on electric power alone for short trips. The 2025 model is expected to offer an electric-only range of around 32 miles (based on the previous model year), allowing many drivers to complete their daily commutes without using any gasoline. The battery can be fully charged in about 3-4 hours using a Level 2 (240V) charger.

Fuel Economy and Efficiency

When the battery is depleted, the Sorento PHEV operates like a conventional hybrid, still delivering excellent fuel economy. In hybrid mode, it’s expected to achieve an EPA-estimated 79 MPGe combined. This makes it an ideal choice for those who want the flexibility of electric driving for short trips and hybrid efficiency for longer journeys.

All-Wheel Drive

Unlike some plug-in hybrid SUVs, the Sorento PHEV comes standard with all-wheel drive, enhancing its capability in various driving conditions and making it suitable for light off-road use.

Interior and Technology

The PHEV model shares the same spacious and well-appointed interior as other Sorento variants, including the three-row seating configuration. It features a large touchscreen infotainment system and an available digital instrument cluster. The PHEV also includes specific displays for monitoring electric range, charging status, and energy flow.

Safety Features

Like other Sorento models, the PHEV comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go

Conclusion

The 2025 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid offers the best of both worlds: the ability to drive on electric power for daily commutes and the flexibility of a hybrid powertrain for longer trips. With its spacious interior, advanced technology, and impressive efficiency, the Sorento PHEV is an excellent choice for environmentally conscious families who don’t want to compromise on space or capability.
