In today’s digital age, connecting with strangers online has become easier than ever. Yet, knowing how to strike up a conversation without coming across as awkward can be quite challenging. Here are 11 simple ways to make chatting with someone you don’t know online a smooth and enjoyable experience:

1. Start with a genuine compliment: Complimenting someone on their profile or a thought they shared is an excellent way to break the ice and showcase your interest.

2. Ask open-ended questions: Rather than closed questions that prompt yes or no answers, opt for open-ended queries that encourage in-depth responses.

3. Be genuinely curious: Show genuine curiosity about the person’s life, hobbies, and interests by asking thoughtful questions based on what they share.

4. Respond thoughtfully: Avoid generic responses and put effort into crafting meaningful replies that indicate your attentiveness.

5. Maintain a friendly tone: Keep your messages warm, enthusiastic, and positive so the conversation remains pleasant for both parties.

6. Share relatable experiences: Bond over common activities or elements of your lives that can foster connections on a deeper level.

7. Use emojis and GIFs: Express emotions visually by incorporating emojis or GIFs in times when words alone may fail to do the trick.

8. Be respectful of boundaries: Adapt to the other person’s communication style, avoid invasive requests for personal information, and be understanding if they choose not to divulge specific details.

9. Offer support and encouragement: Listening empathetically and providing positive reinforcement on their struggles or accomplishments can help nurture an uplifting atmosphere.

10. Stay safe: Remember to protect your privacy by not sharing excessively personal information, and trust your instincts if something feels off during the conversation.

11. Ditch expectations for immediate responses: We all lead busy lives, so be patient if it takes some time for them to reply or keep the conversation going.

By remembering these tips, you can create meaningful and engaging interactions with people you meet online. Not only will this improve your conversational skills, but it’ll also allow you to broaden your horizons and make new connections in the vast digital world.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
