When it comes to teaching science to first graders, hands-on experiments and projects are a great way to engage their curious minds. Not only do these projects make science fun and exciting, but they also help children develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and observation. Here are 11 fascinating science projects that are sure to pique everyone’s interest:

1. Rainbow Milk Experiment: This colorful project explores the interaction between milk, dish soap, and food coloring, creating mesmerizing swirling patterns.

2. Vinegar and Baking Soda Volcano: This classic experiment never fails to impress. Create a volcano using baking soda and vinegar and watch it erupt with fizzing lava.

3. Static Electricity Butterfly: By rubbing a balloon against their hair, children can create static electricity and make a paper butterfly levitate.

4. Sink or Float: Fill a tub with water and gather various objects. Let the children predict whether each item will sink or float, and then test their predictions.

5. Solar Oven: Build a simple solar oven using a pizza box, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Children can use the oven to bake cookies and learn about the power of the sun.

6. Rock Candy: Grow your own delicious rock candy by creating a sugar solution and allowing the crystals to form over time.

7. Exploring Magnets: Introduce first graders to the world of magnets by letting them experiment with different objects to see what is attracted and what is not.

8. Walking Water: Use empty cups, paper towels, and food coloring to demonstrate capillary action and watch water travel between cups.

9. Oobleck: Mix cornstarch and water to create a non-Newtonian fluid that acts like both a liquid and a solid, making for a fun and messy sensory experience.

10. Rainbow Walking Water: By combining water and food coloring, children can create a beautiful rainbow effect by observing the movement of water through paper towels.

11. Bubble Science: Experiment with different bubble solutions and wands while learning about surface tension and the science behind bubbles.

These first-grade science projects are not only educational but also loads of fun. They will capture the attention and curiosity of young scientists and ignite a passion for learning about the world around them. So gather the materials, put on your lab coats, and get ready for some exciting scientific discoveries!

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
