Smart comedies are a unique breed of film that combine wit, humor, and intelligence, offering laughter that comes with a side of insight or social commentary. On the vast forum of Reddit, where movie buffs gather to discuss and rate their favorite films, some comedies have risen to the top as fan favorites. Here is a list of the 10 best smart comedy movies, according to various subreddits dedicated to cinema:

.”Dr. Strangelove or:How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964) – Directed by Stanley Kubrick, this satirical film pokes fun at the Cold War fears of a nuclear conflict between the USSR and the US. Its smart political commentary is complemented by Peter Sellers’ performances in three different roles.

.”The Big Lebowski” (1998) – The Coen Brothers deliver this cult classic that combines noir elements with slacker culture. Jeff Bridges stars as ‘The Dude’, whose lazy life gets turned upside down in a case of mistaken identity.

.”Groundhog Day” (1993) – Starring Bill Murray as an egotistical weatherman who finds himself reliving the same day over and over again, this film tackles existential themes in a humorous way.

.”Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) – A romantic comedy-drama featuring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as former lovers who have their memories of each other erased, leading to unexpected consequences.

.”Annie Hall” (1977) – Perhaps Woody Allen’s most celebrated work, ‘Annie Hall’ deconstructs the typical romantic comedy with innovative narrative techniques and an intelligent script about an eccentric couple’s ups and downs.

.”Wag the Dog” (1997) – This dark political satire stars Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman, focusing on a spin doctor and a Hollywood producer who fabricate a war to distract voters from a presidential scandal.

.”Shaun of the Dead” (2004) – Part of Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, this film is both an homage to zombie movies and a clever comedy about thirty-something disillusionment.

.”In Bruges” (2008) – Martin McDonagh’s film follows two hitmen hiding out in Bruges after a job gone wrong; it is part dark comedy, part existential rumination.

.”The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) – Wes Anderson’s film tells the story of a concierge who teams up with one of his employees to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder. It features Anderson’s signature visual style and dry humor.

.”Thank You for Smoking” (2005) – This film targets big tobacco through its smooth-talking protagonist Nick Naylor who spins on behalf of cigarettes while trying to remain a role model to his young son.

These films stand out for not only making audiences laugh but also making them think, proving that comedy can be both entertaining and intelligent. On Reddit, they’re celebrated for their sharp scripts, dynamic performances, and unique approaches to humor that are not just funny but also thought-provoking.
