The college experience is a profound stage in many people’s lives, and naturally, it has been a prolific source of material for television shows. Here are 10 of the best portrayals of college life in popular TV shows that resonated with audiences for their authentic or entertaining depiction of this transformative period.

.”Felicity” (1998-2002) – This drama followed Felicity Porter’s impulsive decision to follow her high school crush to college in New York, capturing the essence of personal growth and the pursuit of one’s identity and passions.

.”Community” (2009-2015)- A comedic look at a diverse group of students at a community college, this show is lauded for its clever writing and its exploration of the social dynamics and eccentricities of college life.

.”Greek” (2007-2011) – Offering a closer look at the Greek system within colleges, this series presented fraternity and sorority life with all its complexities, rivalries, friendships, and the quest for a sense of belonging.

.”Dear White People” (2017-2021)- Set at an Ivy League college, this show tackles issues related to race relations and identity politics through the eyes of diverse students navigating societal challenges within the university environment.

.”Grown-ish” (2018-present) – A spin-off from “Black-ish”, it focuses on Zoey Johnson’s experience as she transitions from high school to college, providing insights into modern-day issues faced by contemporary students.

.”The Quad” (2017-2018)- Centered around a historically black college, this series offers perspective on the unique culture and issues students encounter in such an academic setting while addressing leadership challenges within the institution.

.”Gilmore Girls” (2000-2007) – This beloved series follows Rory Gilmore’s journey through private high school to Yale University. It effectively encapsulates academic pressures, class disparities, romantic entanglements, and familial expectations intertwined with collegiate aspirations.

.”A Different World” (1987-1993) – As a spin-off from “The Cosby Show,” this program dives into the experiences of Denise Huxtable and her peers at Hillman College, an HBCU where they learn about culture, love, friendship, and activism.

.”Undeclared” (2001-2002) – Though short-lived, “Undeclared” captures freshman year specifics with humor—it revolves around a group of college freshmen learning to deal with life on their own terms amidst raucous dorm life and budding independence.

.”How to Get Away with Murder” (2014-2020) – Though not solely focused on college life, it follows law students entangled in actual legal cases far beyond mere classroom theory under the mentorship of their brilliant criminal defense professor Annalise Keating.

Each of these shows provides viewers with different slices of college life; from laughter-filled communal experiences to more serious commentary on social issues within academia. They’ve earned praise both for their storytelling and for providing a window into aspects of university life that can feel very familiar to those who have navigated those transformative years themselves.
