What Is an XLSM File?

An XLSM file is a type of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file that contains macro-enabled content. The ‘XLSM’ file extension stands for ‘Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook’. This type of file is distinguished from other Excel file formats like XLSX or CSV, which do not contain embedded macros.

Excel macros are programs written in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) that automate repetitive tasks within a spreadsheet. For instance, a macro could be used to sort and filter data, perform complex calculations, or generate charts and graphs. Macros can save users significant amounts of time and effort in handling large data sets or performing complex analyses.

To create an XLSM file, you first need to create one or more macros using the VBA editor within Excel. Once you’ve written your macros, you can save your Excel workbook as an XLSM file to enable the macros to run. When you open an XLSM file, Excel prompts you to enable or disable the macros depending on your security settings. Enabling macros can allow malicious code to run on your computer, so it’s important to only enable macros from trusted sources.

XLSM files are frequently used in professional settings, particularly in finance, business, and scientific fields where Excel is the primary tool for data analysis. Macros can be used to automate complex financial models, track inventory or sales data, or analyze scientific data sets. XLSM files are also useful for creating templates or forms with embedded macros, which can save time and effort when creating new documents.

In addition to Excel, other programs may be able to open XLSM files. However, the macros embedded within the file may not be compatible with other programs, so it’s important to use Excel to ensure proper functionality.

In summary, an XLSM file is a type of Excel file containing macro-enabled content written in VBA. Macros can automate repetitive tasks, saving time and effort, and are commonly used in professional settings. While other programs may be able to open XLSM files, Excel is the best tool for ensuring proper macro functionality.
