Introduction:

Beetroot is a nutritious root vegetable that can be easily grown in your garden. Harvesting beetroot is simple and requires very little effort. By following these nine steps, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown beetroot in no time.

1.Determine when to harvest:

Typically, beetroot is ready to harvest about 50-70 days after planting. They can be harvested at any stage of growth, depending on your preference. The optimal size for harvesting is when the diameter of the beet reaches 2-3 inches.

2.Observe the plant’s appearance:

Look for the top part of the beetroot bulb above the soil surface to gauge its size. The leaves should be green and healthy. However, avoid waiting too long to harvest; overgrown beetroots will have a woody texture.

3.Choose appropriate tools:

Prepare a garden fork or spade to gently loosen the soil around the beetroots during harvesting.

4.Loosen the soil around the plant:

Carefully insert your fork or spade into the soil next to the beetroot plant. Gradually loosen the soil around the beet, being cautious not to damage it.

5.Gently pull out the plant:

Once you have loosened enough soil, hold onto the leaves near their base and pull upward gently but firmly. The entire plant should come out of the ground with ease.

6.Shake off excess soil:

After removing the beetroot plant from the ground, lightly shake it to remove loose soil without damaging its tender roots.

7.Cut off leaves and stems:

Using a sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears, cut off leaves and stems about half an inch above the root. This will prevent excess moisture from being lost during storage.

8.Cleaning your harvested beetroots:

Wipe away any remaining soil with a wet cloth or sponge. Avoid washing the beetroots excessively as this may cause them to rot during storage.

9.Storing and preserving:

Freshly harvested beetroot can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to two weeks. If you have a large harvest, consider freezing, pickling, or canning your beets to enjoy them year-round.

Conclusion:

Harvesting beetroot is an easy, rewarding process that provides you with a delicious and nutritious vegetable. By following these nine simple steps, you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor and feast on fresh beetroot dishes for weeks to come.
