Libby and OverDrive are two digital library apps that have been gaining popularity among book lovers. Both are owned by the same company, but they have distinct differences that set them apart from each other. In this article, we will compare Libby and OverDrive and explore what sets them apart.

User Interface:

Libby was designed to be more user-friendly than OverDrive, with a clean and simple interface, making it easier to navigate. It has less clutter and is easier to use for people worldwide. All the options are well organized, and users get pop up information about books, making it easier for them to select those books. On the other hand, the OverDrive interface can be considered crowded, with numerous options and ads on the front page, making it a bit confusing to navigate for some users.

Ease of Use:

Libby is much easier to use than OverDrive. It has a streamlined registration process that allows users to sign up using their library cards, email addresses, or mobile phone numbers. After that, searching for books, requesting them, checking out and returning them is quite easy. OverDrive is also user-friendly, but it is more complex and may require a day to learn the various features.

File Format:

Libby has a superior file system, and it uses EPUB and PDF formats, which are versatile and can be used on a variety of ebook readers. It is also compatible with audiobooks, which are available in MP3 format. OverDrive uses Adobe DRM, which means that the downloaded material can only be used on devices that support Adobe DRM. Also, OverDrive downloads in app, whereas Libby uses an external software.

Availability of eBooks:

Libby’s catalogs are growing by the day as it offers more than 3 million titles. Additionally, users can borrow a vast variety of audiobooks, whereas OverDrive has a more extensive collection and is often used by larger libraries. Hence, it can often find more sought-after titles on OverDrive than on Libby.
