Step 1: Preparation

Before you begin, make sure to clean all the containers, utensils, and your work surface thoroughly. This will help prevent any contaminants from entering your simple syrup.

Step 2: Cook the Simple Syrup

Combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan, stirring continuously until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for several minutes.

Step 3: Allow to Cool

Once the syrup has cooked, remove it from heat and let it cool to room temperature. This will make it safer to handle and easier to pour into a container.

Step 4: Choose Your Container

Select a clean, airtight container that can accommodate the amount of simple syrup you made. Glass containers like mason jars or swing-top bottles are ideal because they don’t retain odors or flavors.

Step 5: Funnel

Using a funnel, slowly pour the cooled simple syrup into your chosen container to minimize spills.

Step 6: Add Optional Additives

For extended shelf life, consider adding an additive like vodka or lemon juice. A small amount (1/2 teaspoon per cup of syrup) will help inhibit bacterial growth without changing the syrup’s flavor.

Step 7: Seal It Properly

Ensure that the container’s lid is securely fastened, creating an airtight seal that will keep out air and contaminants prolonging its freshness.

Step 8: Label Your Container

Use a marker or label maker to create a label that includes the date and contents of the container. This will help you identify its expiration date later on.

Step 9: Refrigerate Immediately

Store your simple syrup in the refrigerator as soon as possible. This will help keep it fresh and slow down any potential bacterial growth.

Step 10: Monitor Shelf Life

Simple syrup typically lasts for about one month in the refrigerator. However, its shelf life may be extended if you added an additive in step 6.

Step 11: Watch for Signs of Spoilage

Examine your stored simple syrup regularly for signs of spoilage like mold, cloudiness, or a sour smell. If any of these indicators are present, discard the syrup.

Step 12: Make Fresh Simple Syrup as Needed

To ensure that you always have fresh and safe simple syrup, it’s a good practice to make small batches and use them within a month. This way, you’ll avoid wasting ingredients and reduce the risk of consuming spoiled syrup.

By following these 12 steps, you can safely store your simple syrup and prolong its freshness, making it readily available for use in your favorite recipes and cocktails.
