Onions are a staple ingredient in many recipes, and proper storage ensures you always have them on hand for your culinary needs. Follow these 12 steps to keep your onions fresh for as long as possible.

1. Choose the right onions: Opt for firm onions with dry, papery skins. Ensure there is no visible mold, damp spots, or sprouting.

2. Keep them whole: Avoid cutting or peeling onions before storing, as this reduces their shelf-life.

3. Use a mesh bag or basket: Store onions in a well-ventilated container such as a mesh bag, basket, or even pantyhose with holes.

4. Maintain air circulation: Good airflow around the onions is essential in preventing mold growth and rotting. Therefore, avoid overcrowded storage spaces.

5. Keep dry and cool: Store onions in a dry and cool area, ideally at temperatures between 40-50°F (4-10°C).

6. Opt for darkness: Exposure to light can cause onions to sprout and become bitter; hence, it’s crucial to store them in a dark place away from sunlight.

7. Separate from potatoes: As potatoes release moisture and gases that make onions spoil faster, store these two vegetables separately.

8. Hang them up: Try hanging the onions (using a mesh bag) in your pantry to maximize airflow around them.

9. Ultra ventilation approach : Another option is to use salvaged plastic berry containers that provide excellent air circulation for optimum onion preservation.

10. Check frequently: Inspect your onions regularly for any signs of mold or rotting; remove compromised ones immediately to prevent the spread of spoilage.

11. Refrigerate cut onions: If you’ve used part of an onion, store the remaining portion in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container.

12. Use stored onions wisely: When cooking, prioritize using older onions first so that you always have fresh stock on hand.

By following these 12 steps, you can increase the longevity and freshness of your onions, preventing waste and ensuring their delicious flavors are always available for your recipes. So go ahead and store those onions with confidence!
