Introduction:

Fender flares are both functional and stylish accessories that can give your vehicle an aggressive, off-road look. Whether you have recently added new fender flares or your existing ones are starting to show wear and tear, you may want to paint them to achieve the desired look. In this article, we will guide you through a step-by-step process on how to paint fender flares.

Materials and Tools Needed:

1. Sandpaper (400-600 grit)

2. Clean cloth

3. Wax and grease remover

4. Primer

5. Base coat paint

6. Clear coat paint

7. Masking tape

8. Newspapers or plastic sheets (for covering)

9. Spray gun or paintbrush

Steps to Paint Fender Flares:

1. Clean the Fender Flares:

First, clean your fender flares thoroughly with soap and water to get rid of any dirt, dust, or grime. Then, use a wax and grease remover to ensure that the surface is free from any contaminants that could prevent the paint from adhering correctly.

2. Prep the Surface:

Begin by sanding down the surface of your fender flares using 400-600 grit sandpaper until they have a smooth finish and no shine is left behind. This will allow the primer and paint to adhere better for longer-lasting results.

3. Cover Surrounding Areas:

Use masking tape and newspapers or plastic sheets to cover and protect any surrounding areas on your vehicle that you don’t want to be painted.

4. Apply Primer:

With your fender flares cleaned and prepped for painting, apply a thin layer of primer specifically designed for plastics or automotive use on the surface of each flare. Let the primer dry according to the instructions on the packaging, which can range from a few hours to overnight.

5. Apply the Base Coat:

Once the primer is dry, apply the base coat of paint to your fender flares using either a spray gun or brush, depending on your preference and skill level. Be sure to follow the instructions on the paint can or consult with a professional painter if you are uncertain about any steps. Apply several thin coats, waiting for each coat to dry before applying the next (usually between 15-30 minutes). For best results, apply at least three coats.

6. Apply Clear Coat:

After you have finished applying the base coat, use a clear coat paint to develop a glossy and protective finish on your fender flares. Like the base coat, apply several thin coats of clear coat and let each layer dry completely before moving on to the next one.

7. Inspect and Reassemble:

Inspect your painted fender flares for any imperfections or missed spots that you might want to touch up. Once satisfied with the final result, carefully remove all coverings and masking tape used during painting and reattach the fender flares back on your vehicle.

Conclusion:

Painting fender flares is an excellent way to customize your vehicle’s appearance without breaking the bank. By following these simple steps and using quality materials, you can achieve professional-looking results that will last for years to come. Take your time and don’t forget that patience pays off in achieving a perfect finish for your fender flares!
