How to Open a Book: 3 Steps

Opening a book might seem like a trivial and self-explanatory task, but doing it correctly can help preserve the book’s lifespan, prevent damage, and make for a more pleasurable reading experience. Here are three steps to guide you through the process of opening a book—whether new or old—correctly.

1. Gently Remove Any Packaging or Enclosures

If your book is brand new and wrapped in plastic or any other type of protective covering, begin by carefully removing it. Some older books or collector’s editions may come with slipcovers; in this case, slide the book out gently to avoid potentially damaging the dust jacket.

2. Cradle the Book and Open it Slowly

Hold the spine of the book with one hand to support its weight while you use your other hand to gently open the front cover. Avoid pulling or bending the cover too forcefully. Gradually open the pages from one end to the other, taking care not to apply too much pressure on the spine so that it doesn’t weaken over time.

3. Break-in a New Hardcover Book

For newly-purchased hardcover books, breaking them in can enhance durability and help prevent any cracking of the spine—which may occur if opened too abruptly. To do this, hold your book closed and place it on a flat surface. With its spine firmly on the surface, open both front and back covers simultaneously towards each other until they sit flat next to each other. Next, divide your book in half by counting approximately half of the pages and carefully lay them down flat on either side—it’s crucial not to force these pages at any point. Repeat this action by dividing remaining sections in half, spending additional time at thicker parts if necessary; continue until you’ve evenly handled both sides.

By following these three steps when initially opening your books, you’ll help preserve their longevity while also ensuring an enjoyable and comfortable reading experience. So, the next time you pick up a new book or revisit an old favorite, remember these simple guidelines to protect your literary treasures.
