Step 1: Choose your materials

Consider the surface and backing materials for your mouse pad. A popular combination is a smooth fabric surface paired with a rubber or neoprene backing.

Step 2: Determine the size

Measure the space you have available on your desk, keeping in mind the dimensions of your keyboard and mouse. Decide on a size that will be comfortable and fit well in that area.

Step 3: Cut out the fabric

Based on the size determined earlier, cut out a piece of your chosen fabric using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.

Step 4: Cut out the backing

Cut out a piece of your rubber or neoprene backing to match the dimensions of your fabric piece.

Step 5: Attach the fabric to the backing

Using a spray adhesive, apply an even layer on one side of the backing. Carefully lay the fabric onto the adhesive, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.

Step 6: Apply pressure

To ensure proper adhesion between the fabric and backing, use a rolling pin or another flat item to apply even pressure across the entire surface.

Step 7: Trim any excess material

Once both layers are properly bonded, use scissors or a rotary cutter to trim away any excess material from around the edges.

Step 8: Round off edges (optional)

If desired, use scissors to round off the corners of your mouse pad for a smoother appearance.

Step 9: Create seams (optional)

You can stitch around the edges of your mouse pad using a sewing machine or by hand. This step is optional but can provide added durability and visual appeal.

Step 10: Decorate (optional)

Feel free to add designs, patterns, or pictures to personalize your mouse pad. You can use screen printing, heat transfer vinyl, or fabric markers for DIY decorations.

Step 11: Test your mouse pad

Place your new mouse pad on a flat surface and test how your mouse glides across it.

Step 12: Make adjustments if necessary

If you find your mouse isn’t moving smoothly or the pad is too thick or thin, consider experimenting with different combinations of materials.

Step 13: Clean periodically

Keep your mouse pad clean by wiping the surface with a lightly damp cloth and air drying as needed.

Step 14: Replace as needed

Depending on the materials used, your DIY mouse pad might need replacement over time, especially with heavy use.

Step 15: Share your creation

Now that you’ve created your own mouse pad, feel free to share your process and results with friends, family, or on social media platforms to inspire others!

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
