How to Make a Fabric Frisbee

Introduction

Frisbees have been an all-time favorite recreational activity for people of all ages. However, the traditional plastic frisbees can cause injuries and damage when thrown at high speeds or used in tight spaces. To overcome this issue, a fabric frisbee offers a fun, safe, and user-friendly alternative for outdoor play. In this article, we will guide you through the steps on how to make your own fabric frisbee.

Materials Needed

1. Two circular pieces of fabric with a diameter of 9 inches (23 cm) each

2. One circular piece of flexible foam with a diameter of 8 inches (20 cm)

3. Sewing machine or needle and thread

4. Scissors

5. Measuring tape or ruler

6. Pins

7. Fabric marker or chalk

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cut Out the Fabric and Foam Pieces

Using your measuring tape or ruler, measure and cut out two circular pieces of fabric with a 9-inch (23 cm) diameter each. You can choose any fabric you like; however, sturdy fabrics such as canvas, cotton twill, or upholstery fabric work best for this project.

Next, cut out one circular piece of flexible foam with an 8-inch (20 cm) diameter.

2. Pin the Fabric Pieces Together

Place the two fabric circles on top of each other with their right sides facing inwards (the side that will be visible once the frisbee is complete). Align the edges neatly and use pins to hold the two layers together.

3. Mark Your Stitch Line

Using your fabric marker or chalk, draw a circle about half an inch (1 cm) in from the edge of your fabric layers as your stitch line.

4. Sew Along the Stitch Line

Start to sew along your marked stitch line with your sewing machine or by hand. As you stitch, remove the pins that held the fabric in place. Make sure to leave a two-inch (5 cm) gap unstitched so that you can insert the foam later.

5. Turn the Frisbee and Insert Foam

Through the gap you left unstitched, turn your frisbee right side out so that both fabric circles are now facing outward. Use your fingers or a blunt object like a chopstick to gently coax out the edges of the frisbee.

Now, carefully insert the foam circle into the frisbee through the gap. Adjust and smooth out the foam circle as needed, ensuring it’s evenly placed within the fabric casing.

6. Close Up the Gap

Fold in the unsewn edges of the fabric at your two-inch (5 cm) gap and pin them together. Adjust any excess fabric evenly along this edge by pulling slightly on both sides to ensure a smooth seam.

Finally, sew neatly along this edge by hand or with your sewing machine to close up the gap.

Conclusion

Your fabric frisbee is now complete and ready for a test flight! This soft and lightweight frisbee offers endless opportunities for play without any risk of injury or damage to property, making it perfect for young children, pets, or use in small outdoor spaces. Create them in different colors and patterns, give them as gifts to friends or family members, or simply make several of them to enjoy an exciting and safe outdoor game experience!
