How to Do a Headstand: 14 Steps

Step 1: Choose a Comfortable Environment
Find a flat surface near a solid wall with plenty of space around you to perform your headstand comfortably.
Step 2: Gather Necessary Equipment
Use supportive equipment such as a yoga mat and, if needed, a bolster or folded blanket for additional cushion and support
Step 3: Warm Up Your Body
Perform gentle stretching exercises to warm up your neck, shoulders, and spine. This will help prevent injury during your headstand.
Step 4: Assume Position Near Wall
Kneel on your yoga mat with your back facing the wall, placing the top of your head down on the mat.
Step 5: Establish The Tripod Position
Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the ground and align them with your elbows to create a stable base for your headstand.
Step 6: Rest Your Head on the Mat
Place the crown of your head gently onto the mat between your hands. Use minimal weight, as most of the weight should be supported by your arms and shoulders.
Step 7: Lift Your Hips Upward
With your toes tucked under, lift your hips upward like you would in Downward-Facing Dog pose (AdhoMukhaSvanasana).
Step 8: Walk Your Feet Forward
Slowly walk your feet towards your body until they cannot come any closer. This movement will provide additional support for going upside down.
Step 9: Bend One Knee Towards Chest
Bend one knee towards your chest while keeping the other leg straight. Find balance in this position by engaging your core muscles.
Step 10: Lift Second Leg Off The Ground
Extend both legs up against the wall, resting the heels gently on its surface while maintaining balance and stability.
Step 11: Hold and Breathe
Hold the headstand position for several breaths and focus on controlled, steady breathing.
Step 12: Slowly Lower Back Down
Carefully lower one leg at a time to the ground while maintaining control of your body and core.
Step 13: Child’s Pose for Recovery
Rest in Child’s Pose (Balasana) post-headstand to allow your body to recover and your blood flow to normalize.
Step 14: Reflect on Your Practice
Take a moment to acknowledge your progress and commitment to practicing headstands. Remember that patience and persistence will lead to improvement.
By following these 14 steps, you will be well on your way to mastering the art of a headstand. Remember always to listen to your body, be patient, and practice regularly.
