Introduction:

Crochet dreads, also known as crochet locs, are a popular and versatile hairstyle method for achieving beautifully textured dreadlocks. With the right techniques, crochet dreads can look natural and last a long time. Follow these 14 steps to create amazing crochet dreads of your own.

1. Cleanse your hair: Before starting, it’s essential to have clean hair. Wash your hair thoroughly using a residue-free shampoo and let it air dry completely.

2. Section your hair: Divide your hair into sections that are about 1 inch wide. This will help in applying the crochet dread method efficiently.

3. Prepare your tools: Gather a fine-tooth comb, a dreadlock crochet hook (0.6mm or 0.75mm), and wax for dreads (optional).

4. Backcomb each section: Using the fine-tooth comb, backcomb each section of hair from the root to the tip until they start forming knots.

5. Fold the tip: Fold the tip of each section inwards, creating a loop. This will provide a secure end to work with when crocheting.

6. Insert the crochet hook: Insert the dreadlock crochet hook through the loop and gently pull some loose hair strands from the inside out. This will tighten and compress the loc.

7. Crochet each loc: Using a simple knotting motion, move up and down each loc while gently pulling loose hairs through with the hook securely attached to them.

8. Continue working up/down: Work on each dread by moving up and down until the entire length has been crocheted and compressed.

9. Seal with wax (optional): You may choose to seal each completed loc with a small amount of dread wax to reduce frizz and keep them looking neat.

10. Repeat for all sections: Follow steps 4-9 for each hair section until all the sections have been turned into crochet dreads.

11. Palm roll: Gently rub your crochet locs between your palms to smooth out any remaining loose hairs or frizz. This will help give them a polished appearance.

12. Maintain the locs: Over time, new growth will need to be crocheted into the locs. Revisit steps 4-9 as needed to keep your dreadlocks looking fresh and well-maintained.

13. Keep your scalp clean: Use a residue-free shampoo and massage it gently onto your scalp using your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly to prevent residue buildup that can cause itchiness or odor.

14. Moisturize and protect: To maintain healthy crochet dreads, apply a natural oil like coconut or jojoba oil once a week, focusing on the scalp and working it down the length of the locs.

Conclusion:

Creating beautiful crochet dreads takes patience and practice, but the stunning results are worth it. By following these 14 steps, you can achieve gorgeous crochet dreads that will turn heads wherever you go!
