Step 1: Gather your supplies

To core a tomato, you will need a cutting board, a sharp paring knife, and a spoon.

Step 2: Wash the tomatoes

Before coring the tomatoes, make sure to wash them under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris. Gently rub their surface to clean them thoroughly.

Step 3: Place the tomato on the cutting board

Position the tomato with its stem end facing upwards on the cutting board. This will ensure that you have a stable base for coring.

Step 4: Hold the tomato firmly

Hold the tomato steady with your non-dominant hand by placing your fingertips on either side of the stem. Be sure to keep your fingers away from the area where you’ll be making cuts.

Step 5: Angle the paring knife

With your dominant hand, grip the paring knife and angle it at about 45 degrees, pointing towards the stem.

Step 6: Make an initial incision around the core

Insert the tip of the paring knife into the flesh of the tomato, just alongside the stem. Cut around the core in a circular motion, ensuring that you do not cut too deep or too close to your fingers.

Step 7: Remove the core

After cutting completely around the core, use the tip of your knife or spoon to gently pry out and lift away the core. If it does not come out easily, you may need to make additional cuts or use your spoon to better loosen it.

Step 8: Inspect for remaining core material

Check for any remaining core material left inside the tomato. If there are any small pieces dangling from its walls, use your knife or spoon to remove them.

Step 9: Optional – Slice off small green areas

If you notice any green areas near where you’ve removed the core, use your paring knife to carefully slice off these sections, as they tend to have a slightly bitter taste.

Step 10:  Rinse the cored tomato

Rinse the tomato under cold water one last time to dislodge any loose seeds or remaining core material and then pat dry with a paper towel.

Step 11: Enjoy your cored tomato

Now that your tomato is cored, it’s ready to be sliced, diced, or used in your favorite recipes!

By following these simple steps, coring a tomato becomes an easy and efficient process. No matter what dish you’re preparing, now you can confidently tackle this fundamental kitchen skill.
