Catching a squirrel might not be the easiest task, but with proper techniques and persistence, it’s possible. Squirrels are resourceful, agile creatures that can evade capture by the most sophisticated methods. However, trapping squirrels in a humane way can be achieved by following these 11 steps:

1. Know the rules: Before starting your attempt to catch a squirrel, ensure that you are familiar with your local laws and regulations regarding trapping and relocation.

2. Observe their behavior: Spend some time observing squirrels in your yard or garden to understand their daily routine, preferred areas for foraging, and possible hiding spots.

3. Choose trap type: Live traps (such as cage traps or Havahart traps) are considered to be the most humane method for capturing squirrels. This allows you to safely release the animal without causing any harm.

4. Identify bait options: Squirrels are partial to foods such as nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Peanut butter is a particularly effective and enticing bait.

5. Set up the trap: Find a strategic location based on your observations of squirrel activity and place the trap there. Ensure that it is well-balanced and stable.

6. Bait the trap: Position bait at the rear end of the trap so that the squirrel has to venture deep into it, which in turn helps activate the trap trigger mechanism.

7. Monitor regularly: Responsibly check your traps several times a day for any captured squirrels to minimize distress for the trapped animal(s).

8. Safely relocate: Once you’ve captured a squirrel, cover the trap with a blanket or towel to reduce stress for the animal before transporting it to an approved release site.

9. Release with caution: Gently open the door of the live trap at the release site and allow ample time for the squirrel to exit on its own accord.

10. Prevention measures: In order to avoid a need for future trapping, adapt preventative measures by sealing possible entry points to your house or attic and ensuring that bird feeders are squirrel-proofed.

11. Seek professional help if necessary: If you’re still struggling to catch squirrels on your own, it’s advisable to consider hiring a licensed wildlife control professional for assistance.

By following these 11 steps, you can effectively catch and relocate squirrels in a humane and considerate manner while keeping your home and garden safe. Always remember to follow local regulations and prioritize the welfare of the animals involved throughout the process.
