Percent variance is a useful statistical measure for comparing data sets or understanding how one variable changes relative to another. In this article, we will explore the concept of percent variance and provide step-by-step instructions on how to calculate percent variance.

What is Percent Variance?

Percent variance is a measurement that quantifies the difference between two values or data points as a percentage of their average. This can help analysts understand how significantly the values change relative to each other, ultimately providing insights into data trends and potential outliers.

Steps to Calculate Percent Variance

1. Identify the two values: To calculate percent variance, you first need two values or data points for comparison. These could be revenue figures at different time periods, sales figures from different regions, or any other paired data sets.

2. Determine the average: The next step is to calculate the average of these two values. To do so, add them together and then divide by two.

Average = (Value 1 + Value 2) / 2

3. Compute the difference: Subtract the smaller value from the larger value to determine the difference between them.

Difference = Larger Value – Smaller Value

4. Calculate variance percentage: Finally, divide the difference by the average and multiply by 100 to find the percent variance.

Percent Variance = (Difference / Average) * 100

Example Calculation:

Let’s say you want to compare revenue figures for a company in two different years: $100,000 in Year 1 and $120,000 in Year 2.

1. Identify the two values:

Value 1 = $100,000

Value 2 = $120,000

2. Determine the average:

Average = ($100,000 + $120,000) / 2 = $110,000

3. Compute the difference:

Difference = $120,000 – $100,000 = $20,000

4. Calculate variance percentage:

Percent Variance = ($20,000 / $110,000) * 100 = 18.18%

So, the percent variance between the two years’ revenue is 18.18%.

Conclusion:

Calculating percent variance is an effective way to compare values and understand their relative changes. By following these steps, you can easily calculate the percent variance for any two data points. This knowledge can help you make informed decisions and identify trends or outliers in your data analysis.
