Introduction

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a measure of a student’s academic performance, expressed as a weighted average of individual course grades. Calculating your CGPA is essential for understanding your standing in your academic program and ensuring that you maintain the required grades for scholarships or admission to higher education institutions. In this article, we will cover the basics of calculating CGPA and provide a step-by-step guide to help you determine yours.

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a numerical representation of a student’s overall academic performance in their program of study. Each course receives a numeric score called Grade Points, which are then weighted based on the course’s credit hours. The sum of these weighted scores is divided by the total credit hours attempted, resulting in the CGPA.

How to Calculate CGPA

Step 1: Determine Your Course Grades

First, list all your courses and their respective credit hours for each semester or academic year. Next, assign a grade point value to each course based on your institution’s grading scale.

For example, using the following grading scale:

A = 4.0

B = 3.0

C = 2.0

D = 1.0

F = 0

If you received an A in a 3-credit course, you would assign it a Grade Point value of 12 (4.0 x 3).

Step 2: Calculate Your Weighted Grade Points per Semester

Multiply each course’s grade point by its respective credit hour to obtain weighted grade points for each course. Then, add all the weighted grade points together to get the total weighted grade points for that semester.

For example:

Course: English (3 credits) – Grade: A (4.0) – Weighted Grade Points: 12

Course: Math (3 credits) – Grade: B (3.0) – Weighted Grade Points: 9

Course: Biology (4 credits) – Grade: C (2.0) – Weighted Grade Points: 8

Total Weighted Grade Points = 12 + 9 + 8 = 29

Step 3: Add up Total Credit Hours Attempted

Add the credit hours for each course you have taken to find the total credit hours attempted.

In our example:

Total Credit Hours = 3 (English) + 3 (Math) + 4 (Biology) = 10

Step 4: Calculate Your CGPA

Divide the total weighted grade points by the total credit hours attempted to determine your CGPA.

Following our example:

CGPA = Total Weighted Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours Attempted

CGPA = 29 ÷ 10

CGPA = 2.9

Conclusion

Calculating your CGPA is a valuable skill for students who want to track their academic progress and meet targets established by institutions or scholarship programs. By following these simple steps, you can calculate your CGPA and better understand your academic performance throughout your program. Remember to consult with your institution’s specific grading policies and scales, as these may vary. Good luck in your academic journey!
