Canon EOS Rebel T4i review: Good dSLR choice, but only if you opt for top-end

The Canon EOS Rebel T4i, also known as the Canon 650D, is an upper-entry-level DSLR that saw its debut in 2012. It’s an amazing camera that will certainly serve many photography enthusiasts well. However, as the title suggests, it may only be truly worth it if you’re intending to go for the top-end configuration.

At the heart of this camera lies an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. This sensor, combined with a robust Canon’s DIGIC 5 image processor, delivers high-quality images with impressive detail and clarity. It’s capable of shooting at ISOs from 100 to 12,800 (can be extended up to 25,600) providing excellent low-light performance compared to its competitors.

What sets this camera apart, though, is its autofocus system. The Canon EOS Rebel T4i boasts a hybrid autofocus system composed of both contrast detection and phase-detection AF points. When paired with top-tier STM lenses (which translates into Stepper Motor), the T4i really shines. It provides silent and smooth focus transition during both video capture and live view shooting, making it a great choice for videographers.

The T4i also supports Full HD video recording at various frame rates – 1080p30, 1080p24, and 720p60 – giving users versatile options for different situations. Additionally, features like touch-screen focus setting and exposure control further boost the camera’s usability during video shooting.

Ergonomics are another appealing aspect of this camera. The Canon EOS Rebel T4i adopts a clearly structured and user-friendly interface that both beginners and experienced photographers will appreciate. It features a clear 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD that simplifies navigation through settings and makes framing shots more convenient.

As much as this beast has impressive perks, it falls short in some areas too. For instance, its battery life is somewhat limited compared to what other models offer. More disappointing is the fact that its built-in flash cannot perform as a wireless flash commander which restricts external flash lighting options greatly.

In light of these features and shortcomings, the Canon EOS Rebel T4i emerges as an excellent DSLR choice but perhaps more so if one opts for the top-end options including STM lenses. The solid image quality combined with both stills and video impressive features make it stand out in the market flooded with similar entry-level models.

Conclusively, anyone seeking an aesthetically pleasing DSLR rich in specs while not too intimidating to handle could find their match in Canon EOS Rebel T4i especially with top-tier accessories like compatible STM lenses involved.
