Wi-Fi Extender vs. Booster vs. Repeater: What’s the Difference?

Wi-Fi technology has revolutionized how we access and interact with the internet. However, as much as it has improved, Wi-Fi signals can still be unreliable, especially when it comes to coverage. This is where Wi-Fi extenders, boosters, and repeaters come in handy.

What is a Wi-Fi Extender?

A Wi-Fi extender is also called a range extender. It is a device that does exactly what its name suggests- extends the range of your Wi-Fi signal. It works by capturing the existing Wi-Fi signal from the main router and then rebroadcasting it to areas where the signal is weak. In essence, a Wi-Fi extender increases the range of your Wi-Fi network.

What is a Wi-Fi Booster?

Wi-Fi booster is another term used to describe a device that amplifies and improves your Wi-Fi signal. The difference between a booster and an extender is that a Wi-Fi booster enhances the signal strength rather than extending the range. It boosts the signal strength by amplifying the signal that your router broadcasts, enabling your devices to have a stronger connection.

What is a Wi-Fi Repeater?

A Wi-Fi repeater, like an extender, is used to extend the range of your Wi-Fi signal. However, the main difference is that a Wi-Fi repeater receives a signal from the main router and then broadcasts it to areas of your home where the signal is weak without compromising on internet speed.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choosing between a Wi-Fi extender, booster, or repeater depends on your needs. If your network has a weak signal in some areas, the best choice for you is a Wi-Fi extender or repeater as they solve that problem. However, if you want to boost the signal strength of your Wi-Fi network, a booster is the best choice.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech.
