What is an Impact Printer?

An impact printer is a type of printer that uses a mechanical means to transfer ink or toner onto paper. Unlike modern printers that use advanced technologies such as laser printing and inkjet printing, impact printers rely on a physical impact between a print head and a ribbon to create printed characters or images. Impact printers were popular in the past and are still widely used today, especially in niche markets such as ticket printing, bank teller receipts, and business forms.

There are three main types of impact printers: dot-matrix, daisy-wheel, and line printers. Dot-matrix printers work by using a matrix of small pins that press against a ribbon, transferring ink onto the paper. Daisy-wheel printers, on the other hand, use a circular plate containing raised characters on a flexible hub. As the wheel rotates, a print hammer strikes the wheel, causing the characters to be imprinted onto the paper. Lastly, line printers use a continuous stream of characters consisting of a series of pins or hammers that strike a ribbon, creating lines of characters on the paper.

Although impact printers have been largely surpassed by modern printing technologies, there are still several advantages to them. For one, they are incredibly durable and long-lasting. The physical impact mechanism also allows for printing on special forms such as multipart forms which require a carbon copy. Their cost per page is also relatively low compared to printers that use ink and toner cartridges, making them practical for businesses that require mass printing. Impact printers have also been favored in industrial settings where durability and speed are critical factors.

In conclusion, although the era of impact printers is coming to a close, they are still highly valued in certain industries. And while machines such as inkjet and laser printers are more widely used, impact printers will always be remembered for the important role they played in printing history.
