Jamie Dimon says TikTok and Facebook are a ‘total stupid waste of time’ and people should read books instead

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has sparked debate with his recent pronouncements, declaring social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook “a total stupid waste of time” and urging people to prioritize reading instead. While Dimon’s sentiment might resonate with those who lament the addictive nature of these platforms, his stark dismissal of social media raises questions about the complex role it plays in our lives.

Dimon’s argument centers around the potential for wasted time and the lack of intellectual stimulation offered by social media. He believes that reading, particularly books, provides a more enriching and valuable use of time. While the allure of mindless scrolling can be undeniable, he highlights the potential for personal and intellectual growth through reading.

However, dismissing social media entirely ignores its undeniable benefits. Platforms like TikTok and Facebook facilitate connection, information sharing, and even activism. They offer avenues for creative expression, community building, and access to diverse perspectives. To say they are a “total stupid waste of time” ignores the complex ways these platforms influence our lives, both positively and negatively.

Ultimately, Dimon’s stance, while well-intentioned, lacks nuance. The key may lie in finding balance. While indulging in social media for hours on end can be detrimental, utilizing it strategically can enrich our lives. Choosing to prioritize reading doesn’t necessitate abandoning social media altogether. It’s about finding the right mix that allows us to engage with the world while fostering our intellectual growth.
