How to Do Expanded Form

Understanding the concept of expanded form is essential in developing strong mathematical skills, especially when working with larger numbers. Expanded form is a way of breaking down numbers into their individual place values, making it easier to understand the value of each digit within a number. This article will guide you through the steps on how to do expanded form, along with practical examples and tips for mastering this essential mathematical skill.

Step 1: Identify the number you want to expand

The first thing you need to do is determine which number you wish to expand. For example, let’s say you have been given the number 5,378. This will be the number we’ll work with throughout this guide.

Step 2: Break down the number into its place values

Every digit within a number has a specific place value. In our example (5,378), there are four digits, and each one has its respective place value:

– 5 is in the thousands place

– 3 is in the hundreds place

– 7 is in the tens place

– 8 is in the ones place

Step 3: Write down each digit’s value

Now that we know each digit’s place value, we can identify their actual numeric value. We do this by multiplying each digit by its corresponding place value:

– 5 (in the thousands) = 5 × 1,000 = 5,000

– 3 (in the hundreds) = 3 × 100 = 300

– 7 (in the tens) = 7 ×10 = 70

– 8 (in the ones) = 8 ×1 =8

Step 4: Combine all digits using addition notation

To represent our number in extended form, we must now combine all these individual values using addition notation. Referring to our example above:

5,378 = 5,000 + 300 + 70 + 8

And that’s it! We have successfully expanded our number.

Let’s review the process using another example. Let’s say we want to expand the number 2,315:

1.Identify the number: 2,315

2.Break down into place values:

– 2 is in the thousands place

– 3 is in the hundreds place

– 1 is in the tens place

– 5 is in the ones place

3.Write down each digit’s value:

– 2 × 1,000 = 2,000

– 3 ×100 =300

– 1 ×10 =10

– 5 ×1 =5

4.Combine using addition notation:

2,315 = (2,000) + (300) + (10) + (5)

Applying these steps consistently will make working with expanded form easier as you learn to quickly recognize and apply appropriate place values.

In conclusion, understanding expanded form is a valuable skill in mathematics that aids in comprehending larger numbers and solving more complex problems. By following these steps: identifying the number, breaking it down into its place values, determining each digit’s value, and finally combining them with addition notation, you’ll be well-equipped to handle any expanded form tasks that come your way.
