How to Play Outside Linebacker: 7 Steps

Step 1: Understand the Role

The first step to playing outside linebacker is understanding your role on the field. As an outside linebacker, your main responsibility will be to defend against runs, cover short passing routes, and pressure the quarterback. Familiarize yourself with your team’s defensive scheme, and study the playbook to familiarize yourself with the various plays and alignments you’ll be using.

Step 2: Develop Physical Fitness

A successful outside linebacker must possess a unique combination of speed, strength, and agility. Begin conditioning workouts that focus on these attributes and consider working with a coach or trainer who can help you target specific areas for improvement.

Step 3: Master Tackling Techniques

Tackling is one of the most essential skills for any linebacker. Work on proper tackling techniques during practice to ensure you can stop offensive players in their tracks. Focus on squaring up to your target, striking with your shoulder pads, wrapping your arms around their legs, and driving through to complete the tackle.

Step 4: Improve Your Pass Coverage Skills

An outside linebacker will often be called upon to cover short passing routes from opposing tight ends or running backs. Improve your pass coverage skills by practicing man-to-man coverage drills and learning how to identify common route patterns.

Step 5: Learn to Read the Offensive Line

Your ability to read an offensive lineman’s movements will provide valuable clues about the direction of an upcoming play. Work on honing this skill by paying close attention during film sessions and applying what you’ve learned during practice.

Step 6: Develop a Strong Pass Rush

An outside linebacker can contribute significantly to their team’s pass rush. Work on different pass-rushing techniques, such as bull rushing, swim moves, and speed rushes. Having a diverse toolbox of moves will make you harder for offensive linemen to predict and block.

Step 7: Build Your Football IQ

The best outside linebackers possess a wealth of football knowledge and are able to make quick, informed decisions on the field. Continue learning about football strategy, offensive schemes, and your opponent’s tendencies to develop this vital skill.

In conclusion, succeeding as an outside linebacker requires dedication to mastering the fundamentals of tackling, pass coverage, and pass rushing while also honing your ability to read offensive movements. As you grow in experience and develop your football IQ, you will become a vital contributor on the field and an essential part of your team’s defensive effort.
