3 Ways to Make Eyeliner Look Soft

Eyeliner can do wonders to enhance and define your eyes. However, sometimes you might be looking for a softer, more subtle look that’s not too harsh or dramatic. Here are three simple ways to make your eyeliner look soft and natural.

1. Choose the Right Formula

To achieve a softer eyeliner appearance, begin by choosing an eyeliner formula with a soft and blendable texture. Pencil eyeliners are generally ideal for creating a subtle look, as they are easily smudged and tend to have a creamier consistency.

Gel or cream liners can also work well, especially if they come with a soft blending brush. Avoid using liquid eyeliners, as their precise and bold lines can be difficult to soften once applied.

2. Smudge It Out

Smudging is a crucial technique to create a softer eyeliner look. After applying your pencil or gel liner, use a small, flat definer brush or a cotton swab (Q-tip) to quickly smudge the line before it sets.

For the upper lash line, gently blur the edges of the liner in small back-and-forth motions, working from the inner corner towards the outer corner of your eye. On the lower lash line, smudge the liner along the outer two-thirds of your lashes for an understated effect.

You can also smudge a bit of darker eyeshadow over the liner to further diffuse the appearance of the line and add depth to your eyes.

3. Tightline Instead of Lining Your Waterline

For those seeking less intensity from their eyeliner, tightlining is an excellent alternative to lining the waterline. Tightlining is done by applying eyeliner on the upper waterline (the space between your lashes and your eye) instead of on top of your lashes or directly on your waterline. This creates more definition without drawing attention away from the natural shape of your eye.

To tightline, gently lift up your upper lid with one hand and use your other hand to wiggle the eyeliner between your lashes on the upper waterline. A waterproof, smudge-proof pencil liner works best for this task, as it will stay put throughout the day without transferring to your lower waterline.

By implementing these three techniques – choosing the right formula, smudging your eyeliner, and tightlining instead of lining the waterline – you can effortlessly achieve a softer, more natural eyeliner look that still enhances and defines your eyes.
