Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to see the world, experience different cultures, and grow as an individual. If you’re wondering how to make this dream a reality, follow these 12 steps to embark on your international adventure.

1. Research study abroad programs: Start by doing online research on different study abroad programs, getting recommendations from friends or professors, and checking with your school’s study abroad office.

2. Choose a destination: Think about what types of experiences you want to have, such as learning a new language or exploring a certain region’s history and culture. Consider factors like climate, safety, and cost of living when selecting a destination.

3. Determine program duration: Decide if you want to participate in a short-term (a few weeks), semester-long, or year-long program.

4. Understand program requirements: Carefully read the requirements for each program you’re interested in, such as GPA minimums and previous coursework.

5. Apply for the program: Submit your application by the deadline, which may include an essay, resume, letters of recommendation, and transcripts.

6. Secure funding: Look into scholarships specific to study abroad programs or available through your school. Talk with your financial aid office about options for funding your studies overseas.

7. Obtain necessary travel documents: Apply for a passport if you don’t already have one. Determine if you need any visas or other necessary documents for travel and submit applications in advance.

8. Plan your courses: Work with your academic advisor to ensure you are taking the right courses and will receive appropriate credit for studying abroad.

9. Find accommodations: Start looking into housing options early so you can secure a place that meets your needs and budget. Many study abroad programs provide housing, but it’s important to verify in advance.

10. Get travel insurance: Protect yourself against unexpected circumstances by securing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, theft, or trip cancellations.

11. Prepare for departure: Pack your bags, which should include clothing suitable for the local climate, travel adapters, and essential personal items. Notify your bank about your travel plans and purchase local currency if needed.

12. Embrace the experience: Once you arrive at your destination, immerse yourself in the local culture and make the most of your time abroad. Join clubs or social groups, explore cultural sites, and foster connections with locals to truly enrich your study abroad experience.

By following these 12 steps, you’ll set yourself up for a successful study abroad experience that will enrich your education and broaden your horizons.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
