On The Hunt For The Best Sandwich In New Jersey

The quest for the perfect sandwich is a delicious adventure that often goes unnoticed in the bustling state of New Jersey. With its diverse cultures and rapidly evolving food scene, New Jersey offers a variety of sandwiches that cater to every taste bud imaginable.

The journey often begins in the heart of North Jersey where Italian delis reign supreme. The ‘Godfather’ sandwich, usually comprised of layers of capicola, salami, prosciutto, and sharp provolone topped with roasted red peppers and balsamic vinegar on a crusty roll, has locals and visitors alike swearing allegiance to their neighborhood deli.

In Central Jersey, the pork roll (also known as Taylor Ham) commands an almost fanatical following. A fried slice of this savory meat, paired with egg and cheese on a soft bagel or roll, provides a unique taste experience central to New Jersey’s food identity. No two diners prepare it exactly the same way, making each sandwich a discovery of its own.

South Jersey adds its flair with the infamous hoagie – not just any sub sandwich but an art form. Traditional takes include piles of thinly sliced meats like turkey or roast beef, accented by sharp cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and hot peppers – all doused with oil and vinegar. Locals argue passionately about who makes the best one; however, it’s clear that quality ingredients and freshness are non-negotiable.

It would be remiss to talk about New Jersey sandwiches without mentioning the reuben. While not native to New Jersey, local delis add their twist to this classic with hand-carved corned beef or pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on rye bread. The best versions feature meat so tender it nearly melts in your mouth balanced by the tanginess of sauerkraut and dressing.

No hunt for the state’s top sandwich would be complete without a seaside visit. At many boardwalk eateries along the Jersey Shore, seafood sandwiches showcase fresh catches from local waters – crab cakes on brioche buns or grilled flounder topped with lettuce and tartar sauce are delightfully representative of the ocean’s bounty.

Exploring New Jersey’s sandwich scene is an adventure that will satisfy more than just hunger – it is a culinary expedition through tastes that meld traditions old and new. Every town may have a hidden gem waiting to offer up the best sandwich you’ve never had. Whether you’re in it for melted cheese steaks after midnight or an authentic Italian grinder at lunchtime – you’re sure to find a favorite in this diverse state where every sandwich tells another story of New Jersey’s rich food culture.
