The Best Way to Cook Salmon — We Tested 5 Methods, and the Winner Was Fast, Easy, and Delicious

Cooking salmon can be an intimidating endeavor for both novice and experienced cooks alike—after all, no one wants to end up with dry, overcooked fish. With the aim of finding the best method to cook salmon that is fast, easy, and yields a delicious result, we put five popular cooking methods to the test: pan-searing, grilling, baking, poaching, and broiling.

1. Pan-Searing: We started with the classic stovetop technique. We heated a non-stick skillet with a little bit of oil over medium-high heat. After seasoning the salmon fillets with salt and pepper, we cooked them skin-side down for about 4 minutes until the skin was crispy. We then flipped them over for another 3 minutes. The result was a beautifully crispy skin with a moist interior.

2. Grilling: Next up was grilling, the perfect option for outdoor cooking enthusiasts. After preheating the grill on high heat and brushing the grates with oil to prevent sticking, we placed our seasoned salmon on the grill. Each side took about 4 minutes to cook. The grill marks were impressive, but the smoky flavor didn’t penetrate as much as we had hoped.

3. Baking: We then tried baking our salmon at 375 degrees Fahrenheit in a preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes until just cooked through. This hands-off method gave us more time to prepare sides but resulted in a less crispy texture compared to pan-searing.

4. Poaching: For poaching, we submerged salmon fillets in simmering water infused with lemon slices, herbs, and peppercorns for roughly 10 minutes. Although poaching produced tender and moist salmon fillets, it lacked in flavor intensity.

5. Broiling: Lastly, we broiled our salmon about 6 inches from the heating element in our oven for 7-10 minutes until it formed a slight crust on top while remaining juicy inside. This method was quick but required close attention to avoid burning.

After tasting all five methods meticulously prepared by our kitchen team, we concluded that pan-searing is your best bet when aiming for maximum flavor paired with ease-of-preparation. Not only does it yield salmon with an appealing crispy skin and succulent flesh in under 10 minutes, but it also doesn’t require special equipment or waiting for good weather like grilling does.

In conclusion, if you’re after a method that’s both straightforward and near-guaranteed to produce delectable results every time, look no further than your trusty skillet on the stove top. Pan-seared salmon stands out as not just an efficient weeknight dinner solution but also elegant enough to serve at your next dinner party. With minimal fuss and maximum flavor payoff—pan-searing wins our seafood showdown!
