The splendor of the Roman Empire has long captivated filmmakers, history buffs, and audiences around the globe. From epic battles to political intrigue, and from the height of luxury to the depths of treachery, these films have brought to life one of history’s most fascinating eras. Here lies a list of the 15 best movies about the Roman Empire, ranked for your viewing pleasure.

.Gladiator (2000) – A cinematic masterpiece by Ridley Scott that tells the story of a betrayed Roman general who seeks vengeance against a corrupt emperor.

.Ben-Hur (1959) – This film set the standard for epic movies with its classic story of a Jewish prince who is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend.

.Spartacus (1960) – A gripping tale about a slave revolt led by Spartacus that shook the very foundations of Rome.

.Quo Vadis (1951) – This historical drama revolves around the love between a Roman commander and a Christian slave in a time when Christians were persecuted.

.Cleopatra (1963) – Elizabeth Taylor shines in this grand depiction of Cleopatra’s manipulation of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony.

.The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) – The film plots the causes leading to the decline of Rome, focusing heavily on intricate political dynamics.

.A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) – This musical comedy takes a lighter approach to life in ancient Rome albeit with a satirical twist.

.Julius Caesar (1953) – A faithful cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare’s play portraying one of history’s most famous assassinations.

.I, Claudius (1976) – Although technically a miniseries, it masterfully explores the life and rule of Emperor Claudius.

.Caligula (1979) – A controversial depiction emphasizing the decadence and depravity during Caligula’s rule.

.The Last Legion (2007) – A fictional narrative linking the fall of Rome with King Arthur’s rise.

.Centurion (2010) – Focused on a group of surviving Roman soldiers after their legion is decimated in Scotland.

.Rome, Open City (1945) – Despite being set during WWII, this film intricately links with themes prevalent during ancient Roman times about society and struggle.

.The Eagle (2011) – Follows a Roman soldier searching for his father’s lost legion’s eagle standard in Britain, delving into themes of honor and cultural clash.

.Fellini Satyricon (1969) – Federico Fellini’s visually striking journey through Nero’s Rome offers an abstract perspective on ancient debauchery and philosophy.

Each movie presents its own angle on what life may have been like within—and at times beyond—the great walls of one of history’s mightiest empires, providing an assortment—both factually inspired and fictionally entertaining—of Rome’s vast tableau for enthusiasts and casual viewers alike.
