The best breakfasts to keep blood sugar stable — and 3 to avoid, according to doctors

Keeping blood sugar stable is important for overall health, especially for individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day, and choosing the right foods can make a significant difference in maintaining stable blood sugar levels throughout the day.

According to doctors and medical professionals, there are several breakfast options that can help in keeping blood sugar stable:

1.High-fiber cereals: Opt for cereals that are rich in fiber such as oats, bran flakes, or whole grain cereal. These provide a slower release of sugar into the bloodstream and help to maintain more stable blood sugar levels.

2.Protein-rich foods: Incorporating protein into your breakfast can also help in stabilizing blood sugar. Examples of protein-rich breakfast options include eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or tofu.

3.Healthy fats: Including healthy fats in your breakfast can further promote stable blood sugar levels. Avocado, nuts, seeds, or nut butter can be added to your breakfast to provide healthy fats.

On the other hand, there are breakfast foods that are best avoided or limited if you want to maintain stable blood sugar levels:

1.Refined grains: Foods made with refined grains like white bread, sugary cereals, or pastries can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. It is best to avoid these or consume them in moderation.

2.Sugary breakfast items: Foods high in added sugars, such as sweetened cereals, sugary granola bars, or pastries, can lead to a sharp rise in blood sugar levels. Opt for lower sugar alternatives instead.

3.Fruit juices: While fruits are generally healthy, fruit juices can have a concentrated amount of natural sugars. Drinking fruit juices can cause a quick increase in blood sugar levels. It’s better to opt for whole fruits instead.

Overall, choosing a breakfast that is high in fiber, protein, and healthy fats, while avoiding foods high in refined grains and added sugars, can help in maintaining stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. It is always important to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice based on individual health needs and preferences.
