4 Ways to Fix if Microsoft Teams Keeps Showing Away

Microsoft Teams has become an integral part of communication in the workplace, especially with the increasing need for remote collaboration. However, users sometimes encounter an issue where Teams incorrectly displays their status as ‘Away’ even though they are active. This misrepresentation can hinder productivity and collaboration. If you’re facing this issue, fear not— there are several strategies that can help resolve it.

1. Check your Status Settings

The first thing to investigate is your Teams status settings. Sometimes you might have configured it to show ‘Away’ after a brief period of inactivity without realizing it.

– Click on your profile picture at the top of Teams.

– Check your current status and set it to ‘Available’.

– Adjust settings for how long your status should remain active before turning to ‘Away’.

2. Update the Microsoft Teams Application

An out-of-date application may have bugs that can cause issues like misreporting your presence.

– Open Microsoft Teams.

– Visit the ‘Help’ section in the menu, and click on ‘Check for updates’.

– Install any available updates and restart Teams.

3. Clear the Microsoft Teams Cache

A corrupted cache might misrepresent your availability status.

– Close Microsoft Teams.

– Open File Explorer and type ‘%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams’ in the address bar.

– Delete the contents within the cache folder.

– Restart Microsoft Teams to allow it to create a fresh cache.

4. Adjust Your Computer’s Power Settings

Sometimes, your system’s power settings can send incorrect signals to Teams about your activity level.

– Go to ‘Control Panel’ on your PC.

– Navigate to ‘Hardware and Sound’ and then ‘Power Options’.

– Adjust settings to ensure the screen and computer do not go to sleep too quickly.

By following these steps, you should be able to correct the issue where Microsoft Teams continually sets your status as ‘Away’. It’s important to communicate with your IT department before making system changes if you are using a work device. Regular maintenance of personal presence status and being aware of such fixes can greatly improve collaborative efforts within Microsoft Teams.
