The Sesame Smart Lock is a good retrofit lock, but not the best

When it comes to choosing smart locks, there are numerous considerations that go into finding the right fit for your needs. One such option is the Sesame Smart Lock, notable for its ease of installation and compatibility with existing locks.

The biggest draw of the Sesame Smart Lock is its retrofit design. Instead of having to remove your current lock and replace it with a new one, the Sesame Smart Lock fits over the existing lock on the inside of your door. This makes it an ideal choice for renters who can’t make permanent changes to their doors or for homeowners who don’t want the hassle of a complicated installation process.

Besides easy set-up, the lock boasts some decent features like remote access through an app, guest access that allows you to grant entry to visitors without providing a physical key, and automatic locking options. It also works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit—although for some integrations you might need an additional Wi-Fi Access Point sold separately.

However, while convenience is a significant advantage, the Sesame Smart Lock isn’t without its limitations. Some users have reported issues with reliability and connectivity. The lock’s dependence on Bluetooth can lead to occasional problems in communication with smartphones or other devices intended to control it remotely. Additionally, compared to other smart locks in the market, it may lack advanced security features like built-in alarms or the ability to integrate with home security systems.

Moreover, while aesthetics should never be the sole reason for choosing a security device, some users might find that the device doesn’t blend as seamlessly with their home decor as they would like. The look of this lock appears somewhat bulky and may not match every door style or consumer taste.

Cost-wise, while fairly priced, when you factor in additional accessories needed for full functionality (like the Wi-Fi Access Point), it ends up being closer in price to some fully integrated systems which offer more robust features out of the box.

In conclusion, though the Sesame Smart Lock offers convenience and simplicity in setup as well as basic smart features that will appeal to many searching for a retrofit lock solution, it is not without its drawbacks. Prospective buyers must weigh simplicity against functionality and reliability. It stands as a good choice within its niche but may not suffice for those requiring top-notch security combined with more advanced smart home integration.
