Traveling by air can be a comfortable and time-saving method of getting from one destination to another. However, many passengers dread the possible experience of airplane turbulence. Turbulence can range from mild, barely noticeable bumps to more severe and anxiety-inducing jolts. Here are four tips on how to handle and cope with airplane turbulence during your flights.

1. Stay Informed and Educated

Understanding turbulence can make it less scary. Turbulence is often caused by factors such as wind, weather conditions, jet streams, or flying over mountain ranges. Research natural factors that contribute to turbulence so you can be reassured that minor bouts of turbulence are entirely normal and safe during a flight.

2. Choose a Suitable Seat

The location of your seat can influence the intensity of turbulence experienced during your flight. Generally, sitting close to the airplane wings helps reduce the sensation of up-and-down movements due to the plane’s center of gravity being located near the wings. If you’re prone to motion sickness or are easily affected by turbulence, selecting a seat near the wings may help mitigate its effects.

3. Keep Your Seatbelt Fastened

One of the simplest ways to stay safe and secure in case of unexpected turbulence is by ensuring that your seatbelt remains fastened when seated. A fastened seatbelt will keep you from being tossed around due to sudden movements and reduce your risk of injury.

4. Utilize Relaxation Techniques

Staying calm and employing relaxation tactics during an episode of turbulence can help reduce anxiety, making it easier for you to cope with the situation. Breathing exercises such as slow deep breaths or progressive muscle relaxation techniques can help establish a sense of calmness even in turbulent moments. Additionally, distracting yourself with music, movies, or other forms of onboard entertainment can take your mind off any discomfort caused by turbulence.

In conclusion, handling airplane turbulence is all about being prepared, staying informed, and employing coping strategies to ease your anxiety. By following the tips mentioned above, you can have a more comfortable and enjoyable flying experience.
