4 Ways to Revive a Puppy

Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting experience filled with heart-melting moments and joy. However, there may be instances where you notice your precious pup seeming weak, unresponsive, or facing difficulty breathing. In such cases, it’s crucial to know the right steps to take to revive your struggling puppy. Here are 4 ways you can potentially save your furry friend:

1. Clear Airway Obstructions

The first thing you should do if your puppy is struggling to breathe or appears unconscious is checking for any obstructions in their airway. Gently open their mouth and examine the back of the throat for any signs of visible blockages like toys or food particles. If you find an obstruction, use a pair of tweezers or your fingers (carefully) to remove it. Be cautious not to push the object further down, and avoid causing harm to the puppy’s delicate inner-mouth structures.

2. Perform Rescue Breathing

If there aren’t any obvious obstructions, performing rescue breathing on your puppy may help revive them. Cover their mouth and nose with your mouth and gently blow air into their lungs until you see their chest rise. Pause between breaths for three seconds, then repeat 10-15 times per minute until your pup starts breathing on their own or until help arrives.

3. Administer Chest Compressions

If your puppy does not have a pulse, you’ll need to begin chest compressions immediately. With the pup lying on its right side on a firm surface, place one or both of your hands over the widest part of its ribcage and apply firm pressure, compressing about one-third to half the width of their chest. Perform these compressions at a rate of 100-120 times per minute.

While administering chest compressions, continue monitoring the pup’s pulse and stop periodically to check for signs of breathing on their own. If they’re still not breathing independently, alternate with rescue breathing.

4. Seek Veterinary Assistance

Regardless of whether your puppy regains consciousness or not after performing these steps, it’s essential to consult your veterinarian immediately. Update them on the situation, and follow any additional instructions they provide. Even if your pup makes a full recovery, some health complications may be underlying or undiagnosed which require medical attention.

Conclusion

Reviving a struggling puppy is a crucial skill every dog owner should know. Be prepared for emergencies by familiarizing yourself with these life-saving techniques. However, always remember that prevention is better than cure – take good care of your furry friend from the get-go, schedule regular checkups with your vet, and stay vigilant for any potential hazards in their environment that could lead to life-threatening situations.
