How to Dry a Sweater: 9 Steps

Drying a sweater can be a delicate process, especially if it’s made from natural fibers like wool or cashmere. To ensure your sweater dries properly and maintains its shape, follow these nine easy steps.

1. Check the care label: Before doing anything, check your sweater’s care label for specific drying instructions. Some sweaters may require special attention or need professional dry cleaning.

2. Gently remove excess water: After washing your sweater (either by hand or in the machine), lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Gently press down on the sweater with your hands to squeeze out any excess water. Be careful not to twist or wring out the fabric, as this can damage the fibers and compromise the shape of your sweater.

3. Roll and press: Once you have removed most of the excess water, roll up the sweater in the towel, pressing down as you go, to help absorb more moisture. Unroll the towel after a few minutes and lay the sweater flat again.

4. Shape and lay flat: Carefully reshape your sweater by gently stretching and adjusting it until it’s back to its original dimensions. Lay it flat on a fresh, dry towel or drying rack—preferably in a ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

5. Turn occasionally: As your sweater dries, turn it over every few hours to ensure that both sides dry evenly. If you’re using a drying rack, make sure there’s ample airflow around the sweater.

6. Support heavy sweaters: For heavier sweaters prone to stretching under their weight when wet, fold them in half over a drying rack or drape them across two parallel bars with arms matching up.

7. Fluff with hands: As your sweater dries, use your hands to fluff up any portions that have become matted or compressed during the drying process, like the cuffs and collar. This will help restore some volume to the fibers.

8. Completely dry before storing: Before folding and putting away your sweater, make sure it’s completely dry. Storing a damp sweater can cause mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors to develop.

9. Dry clean if needed: If your sweater is made of a delicate fabric or has intricate detailing that requires special attention, always opt for professional dry cleaning.

By following these steps, you can ensure your sweaters dry properly while maintaining their shape and quality. Whether it’s your favorite cozy pullover or a delicate cashmere cardigan, proper drying techniques will keep your favorite sweaters looking great for years to come.
