If you’re a frequent user of Gmail, you probably receive tons of emails that clutter your inbox every day. Organizing those emails can be a hassle, and one helpful tool to make the task easier is by using color-coded labels. In this article, we’ll walk you through some easy ways to color code your labels in Gmail and keep your inbox looking tidy.

1. Create Labels for Your Emails

First and foremost, you need to create labels for your emails. To make a label, follow these steps:

a) Click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of your Gmail inbox and select “See all settings.”

b) Choose the “Labels” tab.

c) Scroll down and click on the “Create new label” button.

d) Type the name of the new label in the pop-up box and click on “Create.”

2. Assign Colors to Your Labels

Once you’ve created your labels, it’s time to assign colors to them:

a) In your Gmail inbox view, find the label list section located at the left sidebar.

b) Locate the label you want to assign a color to and hover over its name.

c) Click on the three-dot icon that appears next to the label name.

d) Select “Label color” from the drop-down menu.

e) Pick a color that best suits your designation or categorization needs.

3. Apply Labels with Colors to Your Emails

With colors assigned, it’s time to apply these labels to applicable emails:

a) Open an email you want to add a colored label to.

b) Click on the label icon (it looks like a tag) located just below your search bar.

c) A list of available labels will appear. Select one or multiple labels by clicking their checkboxes.

d) Click “Apply” — The selected labels will now be attached to that email.

4. Customize Colors for Better Visibility

In case you find the default color options provided by Gmail insufficient or unappealing, you can create customized colors for your labels:

a) Again, hover over the desired label name in the label list section.

b) Click on the three-dot icon next to it.

c) Select “Label color,” then click on “Add custom color.”

d) Pick a color from the given palette or add your specific RGB/HSV values.

5. Filter Emails According to Labels

Finally, to keep your emails organized, create filters that automatically assign labels based on specific criteria:

a) Navigate to Gmail settings by clicking on the gear icon and choosing “See all settings.”

b) Go to the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” tab.

c) Click “Create a new filter” and specify search criteria using the fields provided.

d) Select “Create filter,” then check the box next to “Apply the label” and choose a suitable label from the drop-down menu.

e) Hit “Create filter.”

By following these easy steps, you can color code your Gmail labels effectively and maintain a clean and organized inbox.
