4 Ways to Keep Narcissus Bulbs After Flowering

Narcissus, commonly known as daffodils, are beautiful spring-blooming flowers that bring joy and color to your garden. After the blossoms have faded, it’s crucial to properly care for the bulbs to ensure a successful bloom the following year. Here are four ways to keep Narcissus bulbs after flowering:

1. Allow the Foliage to Die Back Naturally

After the Narcissus flowers have wilted, it’s essential to let the foliage die back naturally. The green leaves continue photosynthesis, providing the bulb with energy for the next growing season. Do not remove or tie the leaves for at least six weeks after flowering; doing so can deprive the bulb of much-needed nutrients and reduce its chances of blooming again.

2. Provide Appropriate Watering and Fertilization

Although Narcissus bulbs require less water as they enter their dormant phase, occasional watering may still be necessary during dry spells. Be mindful not to overwater, as this can lead to bulb rot. Additionally, applying a slow-release bulb fertilizer after flowering can help store energy for future blooms.

3. Lift and Store Bulbs in a Cool, Dry Place

In regions where temperatures remain consistently above 60°F (15°C) during summer months, you may consider lifting your Narcissus bulbs for storage. First, trim back any remaining foliage and gently dig up the bulbs with a garden fork or spade. Clean off any soil and allow them to dry for about a week in a sheltered location away from direct sunlight. Once fully dried, store them in a cool, dry place—ideally between 50-60°F (10-15°C)—within mesh bags or boxes filled with peat moss or perlite.

4. Divide and Replant Overcrowded Clumps

Over time, Narcissus bulbs may multiply and form crowded clumps. To maintain healthy, vibrant blooms, it’s important to divide and replant them every few years. When lifting bulbs in late summer or early fall, gently separate any bulblets from the main bulb and replant them approximately 6 inches (15 cm) apart in a well-draining soil mix. This process ensures each bulb has sufficient space to develop and produce flowers in the following growing season.

In conclusion, taking proper care of your Narcissus bulbs after flowering will pave the way for lush, abundant blossoms in the future. By allowing foliage to die back naturally, providing appropriate water and fertilizer, lifting and storing bulbs in warmer regions, and dividing overcrowded clumps when necessary, you can enjoy these captivating flowers year after year.
