How to Send a Book to a Publisher

The road to becoming a published author can be an arduous one, but sending your book to a publisher doesn’t have to be. Follow these steps to turn your masterpiece into a published work and get it into readers’ hands.

1. Complete and Edit Your Manuscript

Before considering sending your manuscript to publishers, ensure that it’s polished and complete. This means not only writing your book but also thoroughly editing and proofreading it. You may want to consider hiring a professional editor or seeking feedback from beta readers.

2. Research Publishers

Not all publishers are the same, and you want to find the right one for your book. Compile a list of potential publishing houses that specialize in your book’s genre or target audience. You can begin your search online, through writer’s associations, or by attending writing conferences.

3. Review Submission Guidelines

Once you have identified potential publishers, visit their websites or contact them directly for submission guidelines. These guidelines will provide specific instructions on formatting your manuscript and any additional materials the publisher may require, such as a query letter, proposal, or sample chapters.

4. Write a Compelling Query Letter

A query letter is an essential part of submitting your book to publishers. It should provide an overview of your manuscript, briefly introducing the plot, characters, and target audience while also highlighting what makes your book unique. Be sure to include information about yourself as an author, including any previous publications or writing experiences.

5. Prepare Additional Materials

Depending on the publisher’s submission guidelines, you may need to prepare additional materials along with your manuscript and query letter. For example, some publishing houses request a synopsis—a brief summary of the plot—or an outline with chapter summaries.

6. Format Your Manuscript

Adhering to formatting requirements is critical when submitting your manuscript to publishers. Common formatting standards include using a standard font (such as Times New Roman or Arial), applying one-inch margins, and using page numbers. Follow the submission guidelines provided by the publisher for detailed instructions on formatting your manuscript.

7. Submit Your Materials

When you’re ready to submit your book, follow the submission protocol outlined by the publisher. Some publishers require hard copies of your materials, while others will accept electronic submissions through email or an online submission portal. Make sure to keep track of each submission and any correspondence with publishers.

8. Be Patient and Persistent

Submitting a book to a publisher is a waiting game, and some publishers may take months to respond. It’s important to remain patient during this process and understand that rejection is a common part of the publishing industry. Keep submitting your work to different publishers until you find the right fit for your book.

In summary, before sending your book to a publisher, ensure that it’s polished and professionally edited. Research suitable publishers, review their submission guidelines, write an engaging query letter, format your manuscript accordingly, and be patient during the evaluation process. With persistence and determination, you have a better chance of getting published and seeing your work in print.
