Orange peels, often discarded as waste, are packed with nutrients and flavor. Instead of tossing the peels in the trash, try incorporating them into your diet with these three simple methods.

1. Candied Orange Peel

Candied orange peel is a sweet and tangy treat that’s perfect for satisfying your sugar cravings while still reaping the health benefits of orange peels. To make candied peels, follow these steps:

– Remove the peel from one large orange and slice it into thin strips.

– Blanch the orange peels in boiling water for a few minutes, then transfer to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.

– In a saucepan, combine equal parts sugar and water (ex: 1 cup each) to create a simple syrup. Add the orange peels to the syrup.

– Simmer the peels in the syrup for 45 minutes to an hour, stirring occasionally, until they become translucent.

– Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to transfer the peels onto a wire rack or parchment-lined baking sheet. Allow them to cool and dry for several hours or until they are no longer sticky.

– Optional: Toss the candied peels in granulated sugar for an extra sweet treat.

2. Orange Peel Tea

Orange peel tea is another delicious way to consume this often underutilized part of the fruit. With its refreshing taste and purported health benefits such as immune system support, it’s worth giving it a try.

– Thoroughly wash the peel of one large orange and then finely chop or grate it.

– In a saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil.

– Add the chopped or grated orange peel to boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes.

– Let it steep for 5 more minutes before straining the liquid into cups.

– Add honey or sugar if desired for sweetness, and enjoy!

3. Orange Peel Zest

Zesting orange peels is a simple and versatile way to incorporate the flavorful and aromatic peel into your dishes. You can add orange zest to baked goods, smoothies, or as a garnish for savory meals.

– Thoroughly wash the peel of one large orange.

– Using a fine grater or microplane, carefully grate the orange part of the peel to create small bits of zest. Be sure to avoid the white pith, which can be bitter.

– Use the zest immediately in your favorite recipes or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

In conclusion, don’t let those nutrient-rich orange peels go to waste! From candied treats to zesty flavoring agents, there are countless ways to enjoy this often overlooked part of the fruit. Get creative and give these methods a try today!
