5 Ways to Sleep with an Afro

Afros are a statement hairdo that exude confidence and beauty, but taking care of one requires mindful maintenance. One of the major challenges for many afro wearers is achieving a comfortable and sound sleep without damaging their “crown.” Do not let your hairstyle rob you of a good night’s sleep. Here are five ways to sleep with an afro while preserving its shape, texture, and overall style.

1. Pineappling

Pineappling, or gathering your afro at the top of your head in a loose loop, keeps the hair away from your face and prevents it from being crushed during sleep. Secure the pineapple with a silk or satin scrunchie, as these materials reduce friction and protect your hair from breakage. Also, ensure that you do not tie your hair too tightly as it might cause unwanted tension on the scalp.

2. Twist-and-wrap

The twist-and-wrap technique involves sectioning your afro into two, four or six parts (depending on its size) and twisting those sections around themselves before wrapping them individually in silk or satin bonnets. This method protects the curls while maintaining their shape and preventing frizz.

3. Bonnet or silk cap

Wearing a bonnet or a silk cap helps maintain your afro’s shape and moisture while preventing frizz caused by pillow friction. Silk or satin material is essential as it keeps the hair’s natural oils intact and reduces friction-related breakages. When selecting a cap, choose one with adjustable straps for added comfort.

4. Protective pillows

Swap out standard cotton pillowcases for satin or silk alternatives to create a gentle sleeping surface for your afro. Cotton absorbs moisture from the hair, dries it out, and creates friction resulting in breakages and frizz. On the other hand, satin and silk pillowcases make for much smoother surfaces that help retain hair moisture and protect your afro’s shape.

5. Moisturize and detangle

Before hitting the bed, moisturize your hair with a lightweight hair lotion or oil to lock in its natural moisture. Gently detangle your afro with a wide-toothed comb, ensuring you start from the tips and work your way up to the roots. This maintenance routine will keep your afro healthy, and prevent split ends and breakages in the long run.

In Conclusion

Sleeping with an afro shouldn’t be a daunting experience. With the right techniques and care, you can maintain the beauty of your hair even while you sleep. Incorporate these five ways to sleep with an afro into your nightly routine, and rest easy knowing that both your hair and sleep are well-protected.
