3 Ways to Make a Protractor

Introduction:

A protractor is an essential tool for measuring angles, typically used in geometry, engineering, and various DIY projects. While you can purchase a store-bought protractor, creating your own can be a fun and inexpensive alternative. In this article, we will explore three ways to make your own protractor.

1. Using Cardboard or Paper:

This method is simple and easy to make a protractor using materials found at home.

Materials needed:

– Cardboard or thick paper

– Compass or round object (for tracing)

– Ruler

– Pencil

– Scissors

– Protractor for reference (optional)

Steps:

1. Trace a circle on the cardboard or thick paper using the compass or round object.

2. Cut out the circle carefully with the scissors.

3. Draw a straight line across the diameter of the circle.

4. Using a ruler, divide the circle into equal parts along the diameter line, usually in increments of 10 degrees, ensuring that you have marked up to 180 degrees on both sides.

5. Label each angle from 0° to 180° and voilà! You have a handmade paper or cardboard protractor.

2. Creating a Protractor with a 3D Printer:

This technique involves using 3D modeling software and a 3D printer to create a durable plastic protractor.

Materials needed:

– Computer with 3D modeling software

– Digital file of a protractor design

– 3D printer

– Plastic filament

Steps:

1. Download or create a digital file of a protractor design using your preferred 3D modeling software.

2. Load the file into your 3D printer’s software, selecting proper settings for infill and layer height.

3. Insert the plastic filament of your choice into the 3D printer.

4. Begin printing the protractor, ensuring that it prints smoothly and adheres properly to the print bed.

5. Once the print is complete, carefully remove the protractor and clean up any excess filament. You now have a functional 3D-printed protractor.

3. Crafting a Wooden Protractor:

For a more traditional and durable option, craft a wooden protractor for long-lasting use.

Materials needed:

– Piece of thin plywood, preferably at least 12″ x 12″

– Band saw or jigsaw

– Sandpaper

– Wood glue

– Protractor for reference (optional)

– Ruler

– Pencil

– Varnish

Steps:

1. Draw a circle with a diameter of about 8 inches on the plywood.

2. Using the band saw or jigsaw, carefully cut out the circle.

3. Divide the circle into equal parts along its diameter, marking the angles in increments of 10 degrees.

4. With wood glue, attach a small triangular wedge at each angle increment along the diameter line to create a tactile reference for angle markings.

5. Sand the wooden protractor until smooth and free from any rough edges.

6. Using a pencil or pen, label each angle from 0° to 180°.

7. Finish by applying a layer of varnish to protect your wooden protractor.
